From the Campfire to the Moon: Why Scouts Should Attend NYLT

From the campfire to the Moon—NYLT helps Scouts build the leadership skills needed to guide teams, solve problems, and take on big challenges.

In the 1960s, the United States accomplished something extraordinary. A generation of young Americans helped take humanity to the Moon. Many of them had something in common: they were Scouts.

Several key figures in the space program—including Neil Armstrong, Jim Lovell, and Charlie Duke—were Scouts in their youth. The program they experienced helped shape the qualities that would later define the space race: discipline, teamwork, problem-solving, and the courage to lead in uncertain situations.

Those same leadership principles are at the heart of National Youth Leadership Training, better known as NYLT.

NYLT is not just another camp. It is Scouting’s premier leadership course for youth, designed to teach Scouts how to lead teams, communicate effectively, and create a shared vision. Over the course of the program, participants practice real leadership skills through team challenges, planning exercises, and outdoor experiences. They learn how to motivate others, manage challenges, and guide a group toward a common goal.

The lessons mirror the kind of leadership that made historic achievements possible. When engineers and astronauts worked together to reach the Moon during the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, success depended on clear communication, strong teams, and leaders who could stay calm under pressure. Those same leadership habits begin much earlier in life.

NYLT helps Scouts develop those abilities in a hands-on environment. Participants learn how teams function, how leaders create trust, and how goals are turned into action. They also build confidence—something every great leader needs.

Perhaps most importantly, NYLT challenges Scouts to think bigger about their role in the world. It encourages them to see themselves not just as members of a troop, but as leaders who can make a difference in their communities, their schools, and eventually their careers.

The world still needs leaders who can solve problems, work together, and take on challenges that seem impossible at first. Programs like NYLT help prepare the next generation for whatever their own “moonshot” might be.

For Scouts ready to step up, learn to lead, and push their limits, NYLT is the next step on that journey.
