When most people hear “Newport Sea Base,” they picture sailboats. Sailing is an important part of the experience, but it is only the beginning.

Located along Newport Harbor, the Sea Base offers year-round programs that help young people explore the water, marine science, practical skills and new interests. Programs are open to Scouts and non-Scouts, making the Sea Base a resource for families throughout Orange County.

Learn to sail

Beginning sailors can learn the fundamentals, while returning participants can progress into more advanced boats and racing opportunities. Family sailing lessons provide another way for adults and children to learn together.

Get on the water

Aquatics opportunities can include kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, motorboating and fishing. Availability and age requirements vary by session, so families should review the current program guide before registering.

Explore science and practical skills

Science and skill classes connect classroom concepts with hands-on experiences. Current offerings may include oceanography, environmental science, engineering, first aid, emergency preparedness and other advancement-related subjects.

Not every class is offered year-round. Check the calendar for current availability.

Discover rowing

Newport Sea Base supports recreational and competitive rowing. Programs range from introductory experiences to opportunities for young athletes interested in developing their skills further.

Plan an experience for your group

Families, Scout units and other youth-serving groups can request custom outings. Depending on availability, groups may choose from waterfront activities, skill classes and advancement opportunities.

Weekday opportunities

The Sea Base also offers weekday programs for eligible charter-school students. Families should confirm whether their charter school permits funds to be used for a specific class before registering.

There is no single way to experience Newport Sea Base. A young person might arrive to try sailing for the first time, complete a skill class, explore marine science or simply become more comfortable on the water.
