As we head into the heart of spring, one thing is clear—summer is already taking shape in a big way across Outdoor Adventures. Registrations are pacing at or ahead of last year in several key programs, and families are already locking in their plans.

If you’ve been waiting to decide on summer, this is your moment to take a closer look.

What’s Filling Fast

Programs at Newport Sea Base are seeing strong growth compared to this time last year:

  • Squid Camp is leading the way with strong early demand
  • Junior Aquatics and Paddle Sports are trending well ahead
  • These hands-on, water-based programs continue to be some of the most in-demand experiences we offer

At the same time, Adventure Camp and Junior Adventure Camp at the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center are holding steady. With fewer sessions this year, availability may be tighter than it appears.

Happening Now: Camp Tahquitz

Through our partnership with the Long Beach Area Council, Scouts have access to Camp Tahquitz, a full summer camp experience in the San Bernardino Mountains.

This is a great option for troops looking for a traditional Scouts BSA summer camp—complete with merit badges, outdoor adventure, and a strong camp culture. Even better, participation through this partnership helps support our council, which in turn supports local units.

Be on the Lookout

Several additional programs are expected to open or expand soon. Keep these on your radar:

  • Twilight Camp at Oso Lake
A flexible, local option for Cub Scouts with evening programming
    (Coming soon)
  • Cub Resident Camp at IROEC
A classic overnight camp experience designed for Cub Scouts and families
    (Coming soon)

Why This Matters

This isn’t just early registration—it’s momentum. Families are choosing experiences that get kids outdoors, off screens, and into environments where they can grow.

For unit leaders, now is the time to:

  • Encourage early commitment
  • Promote summer as part of your program plan
  • Keep Scouts engaged beyond the school year

For parents, it’s simple: the best options won’t stay open forever.

Start Planning Now

Whether it’s time on the water, a week in the mountains, or a first overnight camp, there’s something this summer for every Scout. Some programs are already filling quickly, and others are right around the corner.
