Scouting has always had strong ties to military families. Many of the values found in Scouting—leadership, service, teamwork, and resilience—are also part of military life.

Now, Scouting America is making the program more accessible.

Beginning June 1, 2026, youth members with a parent or guardian serving on active duty, in the National Guard, or in the Reserve will qualify for Scouting America’s new Military Family Fee Waiver program. The waiver removes the national registration fee for eligible families.

For families across Orange County, this creates a new opportunity to experience Scouting with fewer financial barriers. Local activity fees or unit dues may still apply. However, removing the national fee helps more families participate in the program.

Military families often face unique challenges. Frequent moves, changing schools, deployments, and demanding schedules can make it difficult for youth to stay connected. Scouting provides consistency during those transitions. It gives young people a place to build confidence, develop leadership skills, and form lasting friendships.

At Orange County Council, we believe every young person should have access to those opportunities.

This program also supports the council’s larger effort to grow Scouting across Orange County. By lowering the cost to join, more families can experience the benefits of the program for the first time.

If your family qualifies—or if you know a military family looking for a strong youth program—this is a great time to explore Scouting.

Sometimes one invitation can make all the difference.
