The Orange County Council is offering two sailing courses this winter at Newport Sea Base designed to help young Scouts develop confidence, seamanship, and water skills.

Elementary Sailing, Level 1 AM introduces beginners (ages 7 to 9) to the fundamentals of sailing. Participants will learn basics like wind recognition, rigging, tacking, jibing, and handling their RS Tera sailboats on scenic Newport Harbor. Each student tracks progress in a workbook and earns a certificate upon completing Level 1 skills.

Building on those fundamentals, Elementary Sailing, Level 2 PM is an intermediate class that refines boat handling in increased wind conditions. Scouts will advance skills like roll tacking, refined tacking and jibing, and improved sail trim through practical exercises and fun on-the-water games like boat ball and sailboat basketball.

Both courses run on Saturdays throughout February and require attendance at all sessions. These sailing classes offer Scouts a chance to grow their confidence on the water, enjoy teamwork, and develop new outdoor skills in a supportive environment.
